CulturalHost Program


The Alaska Native CulturalHost Seminar is a comprehensive training program designed with assistance from the Cook Inlet Tribal Council to provide a greater understanding and appreciation of Alaska Native culture for workers within Alaska’s hospitality and tourism industry. The course covers:

  • Discussion of the meaning of culture,
  • Overview of the main Alaska Native groups,
  • Detailed presentations on the culture and characteristics of Alaska Native groups.

CulturalHost Video

The CulturalHost video was produced through a partnership of theAlaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, the U.S. Economic Development Administration, the Cook Inlet Tribal Council, and the Alaska Native Heritage Center.



  • Facilitate a greater understanding of Alaska Native culture among employees of the hospitality and tourism industries,
  • Encourage greater cultural awareness and respect for Alaska's diverse Native culture groups.



  • Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of the five main Alaska Native cultural groups,
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the geogrphical locations for the main Alaska Native groups.



  • Learn about the modern history of Alaska Native organizations,
  • Gain a sense of perspective on urban and rural life today for Alaska Natives.



  • Demonstrate greater understanding of Native Alaskan cross-cultual communication methods,
  • Demonstrate an awareness of proper protocol and etiquette to observe while visiting Alaska Native communities.

The State of Alaska provides information on AlaskaHost classes scheduled by authorized trainers as a service to potential students. Schedules, locations, and fees for services are determined by individual trainers. If you are a trainer and are scheduling a class, please contact staff to have your class listed here.
