The Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Board (AMFTRB) has partnered with the Professional Testing Corporation (PTC), which has resulted in changes to the application and testing processes effective January 2015. While candidates must still submit applications to the State of Alaska Board of Marital and Family Therapy for approval to sit for the examination, the new partnership will provide one-week testing opportunities every month. The application deadline will be the 1st of the month prior to the applicant’s chosen testing period, and examination scores will be sent directly from AMFTRB/PTC to the individual approximately 20 days subsequent to the close of the applicant’s testing window.
To begin the examination application process in the state of Alaska, a candidate must first meet the requirements of licensure as a Marital & Family Therapy Associate. A licensee under this title is eligible to take the National Examination, and must apply on Form 08-4203 to request examination approval. A license to practice as a Marital & Family Therapist, however, will not be issued until the associate has completed 1500 hours of clinical contact hours and 200 hours of supervision. Please see below for 2015 testing windows and application deadlines:
For further information regarding the examination process please download the AMFTRB's National Marital and Family Therapy Examination Handbook.
The Board of Marital and Family Therapy is staffed by the Division of Corporation and Professional Licensing. The board consists of three marital and family therapists and two public members. Board members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature.
The board adopts regulations to carry out laws governing the practice of marital and family therapy in Alaska. It makes final licensing decisions and takes disciplinary actions against people who violate licensing laws. The board meets at least once a year and offers a public comment period at each meeting. Meeting agendas are available from the licensing examiner.
Notice Regarding e-Therapy
Anyone considering utilizing e-therapy, or online therapy needs to know that if you are living in Alaska and receiving e-therapy, or online therapy, from a therapist outside of Alaska, there is no process available for the regulation of that therapist. Please inquire with the therapist as to their credentials and license.
